TH> And Lobdell is always being cited as a "hot, fan fave...."
DH> Interestingly enough... I can't recall hearing one person on this
DH> conference say how glad they were that Scott Lobdell was writing the
DH> "Fantastic Four". The most positive it got seemed to get was, "Well,
DH> I guess I'll give it a chance". My point is that just because he
Yeah, Lobdell as creator on a title does not make me stand up and take
notice. Alan Davis on FF did make me notice but then I found out he was only
going to be on for the first three issues. Pffffttt. Why bother?
DH> wrote an X-book or 2 doesn't necessarily cut him any slack with the
DH> fans of the other (non-X) books. Chris Claremont at least, gets some
DH> respect a lot of readers remember his time as writer of Uncanny X-
DH> Men... and many (even non-X-fans) consider his glory days on the
DH> series as a classic period in that book's history (even though I,
DH> personally, think he burned out on it long before he left). But like
DH> Bob Harras... who the heck is Scott Lobdell?
Oh definitely, Claremont needed to leave Uncanny long before he did. I
remember reading the comic and getting disgusted. I just didn't care where it
was going. At the time I was living in NYC and working for a magazine which
employed Bob Harras' sister (still does) and she knew I read Uncanny so she
asked me what I thought could be done to improve it. I told her it was time
for Claremont to go. Maybe his return to X-land is being looked upon
favorably these days but I could care less.
DH> Rob Liefeld's artwork has never been a particular favorite of
DH> mine either (except for the "Hawk & Dove" 5-issue mini-series he did
DH> for DC)... but if the crappy artwork that eventually became the norm
DH> in "the New Mutants" was going to ever drive me away... it would have
DH> been the Brett Blevins' issues. His style has never appealed to me...
DH> and yet, I persevered through it... only to drop the title a couple of
DH> issues later anyhow...
Oh, please don't mention the Bret Blevins run on NM. That was awful. I like
his work in general though. But those issues were bad and where I gave up on
the series.
