What you mention about playing cards reminds me of the WW1 Christmas truce and
the case where opposing units got to know eachother, befriended eachother,
launched presents from one trench to another and agreed to fire their rifles
and machine guns too high as to not kill anyone.
When higher-ups found out, they cycled the troops quicker so they wouldn't know
eachother and kill eachother rather than exchanging pies ...
