Of course he was well before my time, but I got a book by him from a
library sale (written during or just after his Tonight Show tenure), and I
found him to be an ass, based on his own book.  Go figure.

OTOH, I have always been a Steve Allen fan-- because he was in it, I
watched "The Benny Goodman Story" one rainy Saturday afternoon
(on WOR, no doubt), and was hooked on the music.  And my favorite Steve
Allen joke-- "Police at Miami International caught a woman trying to
smuggle in twenty kilos of cocaine, which was hidden in her brassiere.  A
police spokesman said it was the biggest bust he'd ever seen."
