You can backpack in Oregon with a llama, though the instructions for the
first half hour of the trek did little to have me want a llama on the trek.

Sometime, usually in the first half hour, the string will stop for a potty
break. One llama gets it in his mind that he must poop and, after his
example, the others follow suit. If a llama suddenly stops, check to see if
he is spreading his hind legs; if so, he is getting ready to poop, pee or
both. Some packers train their llamas not to take their potty stops unless
allowed to stop; others just wait until it happens and stop. The latter
method is easiest and not usually inconvenient. Be prepared for the fact
that it takes male llamas a long time to urinate. In a thin stream, it just
keeps coming and coming and coming. Often snow or running water will
trigger the urination response. Train your llamas that they cannot stop in
the middle of creeks to take a leak. Get in the habit, too, of kicking
llama poop off the trail so that other hikers do not have to look at or
step in it.
