subject: Re: [OS2HW] Ecc memory

Hello
It is my understanding that ECC is an extra step that may be deemed
necessary to some kinds of work but is never deemed necessary on the
hardware layer. That is to say that nonECC memory should function fine for
desktop purposes as well as enough to satisfy your mobo/bios. Now there
might be some special sever mobos out there that'd prove me wrong but it's
never a safe bet to try to prove a negative anyway. Bottom line is, if it
POSTs, it works

I agree with Felix regarding the S3 Trio. That entire era of S3 cards,
the Virge, Virge GX etc etc etc is just junk. I have seen numerous of that
ilk fail to deliver even a simple VESA screen free from artifacts. One of
the most common is a a fairly legible. but noisy screen until
something...anything moves - scroll bar, drop down menu, mouse pointer, you
name it if it moves the screen will snowball into pure garbage until a
different move will clean it up again, only to have it dissolve into
unreadable artifact city garbage again. I'd sooner use an old Ati ISA card
I have than any of those S3 monstrosities. The passion you may feel
reflected here is the memory of numerous OS installs faling flat from not
being able to read the screen to push the right button and this from a guy
who has walked through DOS installs based wholly on the sounds of the
machine working. That was fun by comparison.
