Hi! I'm Lori, and homeschool two daughters, aged 8 and 12. They've always
been homeschooled (never registered in school). We're pretty unstructured in
our approach - unschooling, child-led, or whatever you'd like to call it.
We're in WAshington state. The girls' grandpa is currently tutoring them in
math, so they have weekly assignments - but that's about as close to
"curriculum" as we get around here.
The kids choose their own materials and activities, pretty much running with
whatever opportunity presents itself. My eldest has been taking flute
lessons for a couple years, and is now tutoring me on the piano. I had
lessons as a kid, but have learned more music theory from my daughter in the
last month than I learned in several years of piano lessons.
I like to say that we have a lot of learners at our house, rather than
having "teachers" here. There's always learning going on, but not much
formal teaching of anything. The girls are taking gymnastics classes, and
take advantage of community ed classes and the like when something strikes
their fancy. For instance they attended a week of "puppet camp" over the
summer, where they built a puppet and put a play together. We took a one-day
class on Japanese fish-printing a couple months ago.
So what are your kid(s) ages, and what approach do you use for
homeschooling?
Looking forward to hearing from you - LL
