Isn't this a little oversimplified? The part about the great music is
right, but "beholden to no one" isn't. They switched from leather jackets
to pop music uniforms because Brian Epstein told them they had to do that
to be commercially successful. They had ballads and remakes on their early
albums because George Martin thought it was a commercial good idea. They
hid Lennon's marriage at first. They hid their drug use. And so on.
None of this is meant to denigrate the Beatles, or to suggest that the
Monkees were comparable to them -- the Monkees were hired as actors, and
were only secondarily musicians. I actually enjoy the Monkees' music, too,
but they never pretended [as opposed to acting onscreen in their dramatic
roles] to be anything like the Beatles.
