Hello Cal
I agree on the Matrox cards. They may suck for 3D gaming but they are
awfullyn hard to beat for 2D work. I remember the first time I saw the
OS/2 desktop after installing the proper driver for a then new Matrox
G-200. It was literally breathtaking. The fonts were so crisp and clear
and the colors were just luscious. I replaced that card with an nVidia
TNT2 which was the last nVidia card that IBM had free accelerated dirvers
for but it wasn't as pretty and easy on the eys as the Matrox. I bought a
used Matrox Millenium PCI card for 10 dollars recently for an old box.
Even that card has a pretty look that's easy on the eyes.

I know that's weird about the artifact problems but I had almost
forgotten about it until recently when using some old hardware to setup
some basic installs. Slackware was OK but I had selected the VESA driver
and in Xandros I tried the "nv" driver and it was horrible, all
that garbage and memories of past events came back. OS/2 just looked noisy
but then I left it at VGA level. I remember now that it was always an svga
driver that screwed up so bad and often it was a system's default svga
selection whether windows, OS/2 or Linux.

That the same problems could happen with various variations on the basic
S3 chipset certainly says something problematic but no matter now, Matrox
is an excellent choice and should give you a beautiful display not to
mention a fairly wide selection of drivers.
Jimmy
