IMHO it's part of the move from mil specific to "platforms" which
can be built more as std commercial designs & then equipped e.g.
airliners as bombers/tankers/troop carriers/surveillance aircraft/c3 assets
etc, "fleet auxiliaries " being used (as here) as
"cruisers" etc.etc.

I keep saying that the RN should build some bloody great "container
ships" with RO-RO & a flat top which can either have more
containers stacked on top (in addition to those "in the hold") is
required or where the flat top + "hold" can be used as a flight
desk + hanger.

There is no need for speed any more as an aircraft/missile/ssn will always
be quicker anyway so...
