Control of populations has remained in essence the same as long as people
haven't changed. Babylon 2 Baghdad.

A city wall has always been both a protection against the outside & a
means of control over those inside. e.g. recently the Israeli wall +
checkpoints where roads are closed using a D9 bulldozer mounting up a big
berms vs the "city gate" where taxes are raised & people are
checked.

c.f. Faust "outside the city gate" & "Therefore Jesus
also suffered outside the city gate in order to sanctify the people by his
own blood" etc.

Maybe like Jonah they can head outside the city gates to see what will
happen to the city.

More interesting is the increase int the control via fear e.g. people being
snatched & then turning up semi-decomposed but obviously tortured
& then executed.

The prison of reality or the prison of the mind, the debate continues as to
the most effective means of control.
