I watched a doco on Discovery/Nat Geo/History (pick one) channel last night
about the development of each part of a car's subsystems. On tyres, they
made the point that the reason that US automakers hung on to bias ply tyres
for so long in the face of the better performing radials was that they
required only that their tyres be round, black and cheap - and so long as
they were cheap, they weren't too fussy about how round and black they
were.
