You obviously haven't been paying attention in here. From a consumer's
point of view, a "free" cellular phone IS free.
Customers who already own a cell phone, and who sign up for new service
pay the exact same rates, under the exact same terms, as someone who
gets a "free" phone. Therefore, the rates have nothing to do with
getting a free phone. I activate both new and old phones every day. I
assure you there is no difference in the contracts, regardless of
whether the customer gets a phone or not.
Second, even though someone pays for the phone, that someone is not the
cosnumer. Therefore, from the consumer's perspective, the phone IS free.
If you are given a birthday gift, the gift-giver paid for it, so to them
it is not free. But to you, since you aren't the one who paid for it, it
IS free.
