Greetings from Pensey's Point, Wayne!
Wayne Logan put fingers to keyboard and spelled out some words about
ramdisk&gw to All on 30-May-96.

DR DOS 6.0 is not "full of bugs", but it is not MS/PC-DOS and does take
a different design approach. With the result that a FEW programs which
use undocumented MS/PC-DOS features don't work with it. Generally
speaking you should not find this a problem if you have an
Ensemble-based system (as you have found). It MAY be more of a problem
on a Windows 3.11 system. Whilst you lose the copy and paste feature,
you can overcome most, if not all, problems by moving to Novell DOS 7.0.
The only major problem I have found is with Zip (tm) software and
drivers. If you have a Zip drive, you must use Novell, DR DOS 6.0 is
just too much hassle, although it will work allbeit imperfectly.
WL> I have a vague recollection that there was something on the ramdisk in a
WL> GEIGA newsletter, but don't know if that's the case, or if I'm
 WL> dreaming.
You can certainly specify a ramdisk for the swapfile, but I am not sure
how big a disk you need to be safe, nor have I done tests to measure any
speed benefits. If you had 8MB, I would suggest trying a 4MB ramdisk
(I'd suggest SRDISK because you can vary its size without rebooting),
but some users have claimed success with 2MB ramdisks.
On the subject of people making claims about versions of DOS, a client
of mine was advised by a "friend" to take PC DOS 7.0 off his Windows
machine for "greater Internet compatibility". Changing to MS-DOS 6.22
cost him 14K of conventional memory, disabled his anti-virus software
and also disabled his automatic memory optimisation (RAMBOOST). At heart
both are the same code, so how much compatibility would he gain?????

Pensey
