Spake Harry, An outstanding and current review of these critters is at anandtech.com, including consideration of speed with different file systems. http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2549 But: "The problem with USB flash drives, however, is that the controller and the flash memory are rarely constant within the manufacturing of a single drive. In order to keep costs down and maintain a steady supply, most manufacturers obtain their controllers and memory from multiple sources, so buying one drive doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get the same combination of controller and memory that we test here." Also, there is no consistency in contoller across different size models. That disclosed, they go on to test and document drives that may look like what you have, but perform differently for the best of reasons: they're not the same under the skin. I left one balm out, though: Buy an expensive, high performance model, and it will more likely perform as promised. answering: "Julian Thomas" ' message of: 10/20/05 at 10:56 AM, About:[OS2HW] PNY 256 MB USB 2 Attache ?? Picked one of these up at Staples (good rebate). It doesn't work on either of two eCS machines. One of them doesn't even see the device (usbresmon); the other detects the device but cannot read - dir gives: SYS0027: The drive cannot find the sector (area) requested. Oddly enough, usbresmon shows it as a Toshiba product 0x6532. Works in W2k, but hardware manager doesn't show anything useful. According to the os2warp.be USB database, the 512 meg version works OK, but I'm wondering if there has been a change between then and now (the pkg has a copyright 2005 date). OK, reformatted it as FAT16 on windows and now it works on one eCS machine, although the other still can't see it in usbresmon. Plugging in a CF card reader on that machine and it does see that. I think all these machines are USB 1.1. ???
