JG> Well, that seemed to work. It's showing you as
JG> Paul Edwards from 3:712/610.20 on my system.

PE> Ah yes, I see that too. I will be interested to see what happens if
PE> someone replies to one of your UUCP messages, whether their software
PE> puts in X-comment-to (tin doesn't appear to), and whether your gating
PE> software knows about that also. Otherwise, messages will come out as
PE> addressed to "All", but I don't think that's what Alan is
talking about.

JT> Actually, this is the very thing that has concerned me all along with
JT> newsgroups. Any gated mail to fido is always addressed to
"all". So
JT> you don't really know a particular message is addressed to you unless
JT> you actually read ALL the messages.

JT> I know many real news readers are threaded, so you can see
JT> the chain of replies and who started it. Can this information
JT> be used to somehow put in the intended "TO" name? Or is there
JT> simply not enough information in the message to do this?

There usually is enough. Normally the first line of the body
of the message contains who wrote what is being replied to.

It should be feasible to have a reader which has a phantom
To: field which doesnt actually from the header at all but
has been extracted from the body of the message.

There is also normally a full message ID
which allows complete threading etc too.
