=> I though the 426 was a wedge head until 1965. The '63-64's
=> were wedges, with the ram induction, and a 4 barrel carb
=> over each head with LONG intake runners.
Ahh... something I know something about...
Yes, there was indeed a 426 Hemi engine available in 1964 as part of
Chrysler's
race efforts. Anyone who wanted one could order up a '64 Dodge or Plymouth
equipt with the new (at the time) 426 "race version" Hemi engine, which
incidently was the only version of the 426 Hemi that was ever available with

single carb. The engine had outrageous compression, a mechanical camshaft
with
radical specs, and supposedly was able to produce close to 600 hp in NASCAR
trim. In 1966 the "street hemi" appeared, with a hydraulic cam, 10.5
istons,
and an in-line 2x4 intake sporting a pair of AFBs, along with some durability
mods to valve gear in an effort to get the beast in line with Chrysler's 5-50
warranty program. The 426 Hemi engine was a developement of the 426 "wedge"
engine produced from 1963 through 1965 in various forms, including the
spectacular Stage-III "Max-Wedge" form, which sported a short-ram magnesium
intake with staggered AFB carbs, and managed 425 hp in street trim. This
version was available in 1964 only. The 1963 Stage motor made 415 hp if I
recall correctly, but otherwise looked just like the '64 version. The single
carb 426 wedge engine usually supplied in B body cars through 1965 was rated
at
365 hp, I believe... and was basically the starting point for the 440 engine
which was little more than a 426 wedge engine with a .070 overbore.
I've owned a couple of 426 wedge engines, one bone stocker 365 hp version and
one of "the Good Ones" which I put into a '66 Plymouth Satellite years ago.
I *liked* it. Speaking of wedges:
That "long-tube" ram induction manifold you mentioned was only seen on the
13
wedge engines supplied with the Chrysler "300" Letter-series cars (and a
few*
Desoto Adventurers), from 1958 until 1965, which was the last year for the
13
in any form (actually, in 1965 the "300" 413 switched to an in-line 2x4 bbl
carb intake). The short-ram magnesium intake usually found on 426 Max-Wedge
engines was an option on Chrysler "300" 413 engines in 1961, but standard on
the 420 hp 413 "Super-Stock" Dodge Darts and Plymouths in 1962.
The rest got the long ram intake. None of the 426 wedge engines came supplied
with the long tube intake which was actually a two-piece affair which
positioned the carbs over top of the valvecovers. I have one of these
-piece
intakes hanging on the wall in my basement.
=> The 392 was built first in 1957.
=> The 392 was only available in Chyslers and Imperials, never
=> in a Dodge. It also was only around for two years '57-58.
Never in a Dodge car, but it ended up in a few Dodge trucks through 1959, lo
and behold. One of the guys associated with the local Mopar club has a 1957
Dodge wrecker truck with a 392 Hemi engine in it. It's rusty, dinged and
scratched, and the engine smokes a bit, but it still runs and it still works
for a living, towing cars. I ended up digging up some mopar data on the 392
engines just to satisfy myself that the old truck didn't get an engine
transplant along the way... and according to Chrysler, some trucks did get
392 engines through 1959, although the car 392 engines were discontinued in
1958. This example is the only one I ever saw.
392 Hemi engines are getting kinda scarce these days... a fellow I know has
one
in a crate, in pieces, everything's there... needs boring, pistons, and the
standard odds and ends associated with a rebuild. He wants 300 bucks for the
carcass as it sits. What a wonderful engine to slip into a street rod, maybe
a
T-bucket... 3x2 bbl carbs, chromed valve covers, three little air cleaners
sticking up over the carbs, polished intake... that sort of thing...
