| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] Changing partition size and still able to boot os2 |
Hello I agree that it is much smarter, especially in terms of backup and partition maintenance, to keep just the OS's bare essentials on one partition and all programs, data, and the normal digital flotsam and jetsam on non-booting partitions. Unfortunately the programmers of applications, especially windows applications, either don't agree or don't help because everybody and his brother wants to default to C:\Program Files\whatever as well as place an icon on the desktop, in quick launch, in "programs", and also place at least one if not several items in "Startum" to run what used to be called TSR applications. What a complete cluster f___,... errr orgy. So as applies to the original poster it is certainly true that it is not necessary and ultimately better if you don't expand "C" and tempt Murphy in the process and just be diligent about telling app[lications where to go, Not "C", thank you very much. As for swap/paging file, yes, thankfully XP does allow and even provide somewhat better control over paging files. The "handle" is located under "My Computer" > Properties >Advanced>Advanced" under "Performance" or such depending on Home or Pro but is referred to first as "Virtual Memory" then as "paging file" and the exact page has a list of all your drives with how much free space each is reporting and you can individually choose which ones get the swap file and how big it is. It is still fastest if you choose a static size where start size and max size are the same but give it plenty of size then especially if you use ram heavy apps like Photoshop, Cold Fusion, Dreamweaver, etc (those 3 can eat up over 2 Gigs in a heartbeat). It is even possible to build a dedicated swap drive but it takes a little doing to get XP to stop worrying that it is "running out of room" and it will insist on placing a Recycled folder and System Volume Information on it. Man, Windows can insist on th e stupidest stuff!
