subject: BIRDS IN VETS OFFICES

->AREA:PARROTS
->Do you think a bird at a vets office can pass off viruses and
->bacteria that
->comes through the vets door from other sick birds? Like typhoid
->Mary?
While *most* avian disease causing organisms aren't transmitted simply
via airborne means, it has been proven that the PBFD agent can be recovered
from the dander and "powder" of infected birds, especially those such as
cockatoos that produce more feather dust.
The brighter side, however, is that mature birds don't seem to be infected
by exposure to the PBFD virus... whereas babies with lymph systems that
are not yet completely developed are indeed at a risk.
At any rate, I'd make every effort to board a pet bird at someplace other
than a vet's office, unless you've seen the boarding facilities and feel
assured that "healthy" boarders are isolated from patients... and that
the staff is trained in preventing human-vector contamination.
Unfortunately, I've seen far too many facilities where neither of the
above practices are up to my standards.
