Yes Rick....bunk that you have never investigated and apparently know
very little about. I am not talking about spelling instruction when I
speak of approximated spellings. You probably did spelling
approximations when you were a kid. Your children (if you have any)
probably have approximated spelling. Most, if not all, approximate
since they can do nothing else (unless of course they are forbidden to
write anything at all until they are proficient at spelling).
If a kid spells
RP>"cheese" as "cheez" every single time, he "knows" to spell it this
RP>way and therefore he has learned to spell it this way.
A good teacher includes spelling instruction in the writing process and
this kid would not continue to spell cheese incorrectly with a
knowledgeable teacher. The fact that a child may begin to spell "cheez"
is no big deal. If it happens at first grade, what's the problem? I
have seen the research -- validated and accepted by the leading early
childhood _experts_ who say that children's spelling does improve and
that approximations are only temporary. You are basing your opinion on
what? You clearly reject the research data but you base that rejection
on your limited and non-representational observations. I think you have
some major misconceptions on what is meant when I speak of approximated
spelling.
At some point
RP>(but perhaps never), the correct spelling will have to be taught him,
RP>and then he'll have to unlearn the wrong spelling he has been
RP>permitted to use by teachers with lazy intellects.

This is a bit uncalled for in this forum I think. I think we can
disagree without the caustic name calling.
