Hi Cal & Vic,
One can learn a _lot_ reading through the APAR listings!
Also I don't think that Vic knows this, but the boot procedure doesn't
put the "installed" message up there on screen until after it has
successfully loaded the driver/run the command etc., so it's the last
successful loading that is the final line written to the screen, and
it's thus the next one that is actually failing!
Simple enough to test - use a "message string"** with a utility like
delay.sys, and stick an instance with e.g. a 5 second pause associated
with all statements in config.sys that write to the screen, when
attempting to resolve boot problems in _unusual_ conditions - like
booting with minimal boot partitions, with virtually all of the OS/2-eCS
tree on a different diskand even the desktop and os2*.ini files not on
the !
** from delay.doc in delay.zip:
The DELAY driver - version 1.7
------------------------------
This is a simple OS/2 device driver for providing a timed delay during
system startup from CONFIG.SYS. It is useful in situations where
several
machines are being brought up at the same time, but some must not
proceed
past a certain point until others are fully functional. It is also
very
useful when a message from some device driver scrolls by on the screen
too fast to be read or analyzed.
Installation
============
Copy DELAY.SYS to a convenient directory; it does not have to be on your
boot disk, and it may be convenient to keep it elsewhere if you are in
the habit of reformatting it to install new versions or betas of OS/2!
Usage
=====
To insert a delay of up to 30 minutes in a CONFIG.SYS file for OS/2,
insert the following statement in CONFIG.SYS and reboot the system
(optional parts are shown here in square brackets):
DEVICE=d:\path\DELAY.SYS [/K] mm:ss [message]
THE [/K] means continue if a keystroke is entered at the keyboard -
primarily when there would otherwise be a significant wait until it
timed-out. Also the minutes can be omitted - is understood then to be
just seconds.
like:
BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD
DEVICE=:\os2\boot\pause.sys /K 05 that was OS2DASD.DMD that just loaded
BASEDEV=OS2LVM.DMD
DEVICE=:\os2\boot\pause.sys /K 05 that was OS2LVM.DMD that just loaded
BASEDEV=CHKDSK.SYS
DEVICE=:\os2\boot\pause.sys /K 05 that was CHKDSK.SYS that just loaded
RUN= . . . . . . .
DEVICE=:\os2\boot\pause.sys /K 05 that was os2lvm.dmd that just loaded
.
.
RUN=E:\OS2\SYSTEM\LVMALERT.EXE
DEVICE=:\os2\boot\pause.sys /K 05 that was LVMALERT.EXE that just loaded
ETC.
IIRC, it was Bob Eager who provided this little gem!
