A lot of the earlier ones, ie, around about year 2000 seemed to have
been ECC only, clone MB's however that could take ECC ram normally
had the standard dual memory controller, unlike a lot of the name brand
server class machines. I've been caught a few times :)

I would tend to say the problem is not RAM but very likely the graphics card,
or the video driver in second place. If the MB had an ECC only controller,
SDRAM wouldnt work.
