Hi Dale, DS> It is possible that in five years modems will have been DS> replaced by cable or DSL modems and become as obsolete DS> as a 5 1/2 inch floppy or a tape drive. Difficult as predicting the future may be, I sincerely doubt that. Are you aware that present dsl technology allows only 10 out of 100 subscribers in the same main cable to use it? If more are added in the same cable, the cross talk becomes problematic. Cable has another problem. The bandwidth is shared among the users, so if there are too many on the same block, the speed drops to an uncomfortable crawl. Bringing wide band to every home requires new technology and eventually that will come of course. But not in five years. And until then, many people will still depend on classic modem technology.
