That was indeed a part of their conflict. Roddenberry had said he wanted to
do this on TNG (and never did, BTW), so Gerrold wrote an episode called "Fire
and Ice". It was something of an AIDS allegory in its main plot. And it did
feature a same-sex couple. Roddenberry initially accepted the script and
then later rejected it.
The main conlict, though, was Gerrold's contention that he get some credit as
a co-creator of TNG for the extensive work he had done in the initial stages
of the inception of the show.
