No need to slow down so much.  The limit is not the writer, but he media.
No NO media currently available will perform measurably better at 1x and 2
x than at 4x or 8x. Coasters at 4x and 8x mean coasters at even slower
speeds due to lousy media.

     Well, it has been long enough ago, I don't specifically remember
the speed setting.  Basically I work at slow speeds; 1X, 2X and 4X.  I
am just getting ready to try again this
weekend.
