You don't plug it in.  When accelerating or going uphill the batteries
drive an electric motor to assist the gas engine.  When decelerating or
going downhill the motor acts like a generatore and recharges the
batteries.  The instrument display is quite fascinating and I'm probably
spending too much time looking at it.
