subject: Zone Rating

David Lentz gave up a long homer to Otis Nixon and said:
DL> The good news. At least you haven't changed your position of zone
 DL> ratings.
Why is this good news, David? Do honestly believe that I'd be stupid enough
to change my mind over something that I KNOW is moronic?
DL> proof that the increase was due to the factors you cited. I believe
DL> that somebody mentioned early in the season that Alomar had moved two
 DL> steps to his right.
It's too bad that you get all of your info 3rd or 4th hand because, with the
exception of his games against Cleveland, I haven't seen this mythical
positioning change (Cleveland is different as the Orioles shift him so that
he's almost on second when batters like Albert Belle are up).
DL> The increase in Alomar's zone rating also supports the contention
DL> that he was mispositioned while while playing in Toronto.
The fact is, he's positioned EXACTLY like he was in Toronto. The difference
between Toronto and Baltimore is the fact that he's playing on a MUCH SLOWER
surface and those balls aren't screaming out of his reach like they did in
Skydome.
EVERYTHING that I said would happen before he even played a game with the
Orioles has come true: not only has his Zone Rating skyrocketed, you are
crediting his positioning and not the change in surface/type of pitchers. As
I had pointed out (and quoted), Cal Ripken doesn't share your opinion of his
positioning.
