I'm not sure where it was,  but somewhere in one doc file or another I saw
some documentation about the format of some of these files.  I'm pretty
sure that .wav is just a small amount of header information prepended to
what amounts to raw dsp data.  Try man sox,  perhaps?  :-)  If I run across
it again I'll let you know where...
