| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] SATA Vs PATA Vs USB 2.0 Harddisks |
Hello It is my understanding that the bottleneck is presently on the hard drives themselves as few saturate their respective interface. The only SATA drive I know of that comes close is the ultra scsi fast SATA WD 10K rpm Raptor. However I assume cost is a consideration and while SATA drives seem to sell for no less than around 50 cents a Gig, occaissional sales in the USA have PATA as low as 25 cents a Gig ie 160 Gig for 40bucks for a WD from Best Buy. The hottest gaming machines made which are the fastest desktop PCs in existence, those in the $5000 and up category which usually sport the AMD FX57 64bit processor btw, also tend to have 2 Raptors in raid (for extreme speed) but because of their relatively small size availability (max 74Gig) also have a 250-300 Gig storage drive, often the new Maxtors w/ 16M cache, all SATA. However these as you can see are price-is-no-object,speed-is-everything PCs. In gaming, lack of speed can get you "killed" so even milliseconds count, but I can't imagine that your needs are quite so intense, nor your purse so cavalier, so I wouldn't rule out PATA w/o first checking prices.
