| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] New Motherboard--Advice Requested |
HI Felix
While I don't see Intel complaints in particular in the Linux world I
can't help but notice that while there have been 64bit kernels out for
awhile there has not been compilations for specific CPUs until recently and
they have mostly been for AMD. I am a longtime fan/user of Slackware and
when this year SLAMD64, a downoladable ISO of a collection parallelling
Slackware 10.2 but with all packages setup/collected for the AMD 64
platform, was made available it was the last straw I needed that pushed me
over the edge from mere gear lust to "must have" and Man! am I
glad I did. SLAMD64 is superbly stable and just blazing fast. Recent
threads here from my posts regarding OS/2, in this case WSeB 4.5, should
document that the only "trouble" I had first in running an old
system and finally making a fresh install was to use updated hard drive
files or Danis506, once I dsicovered I had an old IDE CDROM drive that
seemed to work but apparently had severe error problems. Once replaced
with a
working CDROM BAM! it went right in!
Just for the record and perhaps as a recommendation for this thread
(and I believe there is still a healthy sale on this model going on at
newegg.com) my mobo is
MSI K8n-Neo2 Platinum with the nForce3 chipset
The basic K8N Neo2 starts at about $70 US but the Platinum has a few
extras and can be had between $90 and $120 depending on sales. Considering
the Athlon 64 3000+ Venice core sells for under $150 it is a pretty amazing
buy (little more than $200) for what has been a trouble-free and
thrillingly impressive experience. Even one of the onboard LAN's works
fine in OS/2.
