I'll second that - not a recorder, anyway, and almost certainly not one
that supports dual-layer (9GB) DVD's, or all the formats out there.

For the C$60 price tag, get yourself an LG DVD+-RW drive that supports
DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R, CD-RW, and just about anything
else... including dual-layer (which is still really expensive, per
disc).

There's little gained from "going SCSI", anyway - even the fastest DVD
drive will still function at top-speed with a lowly ATA-33 ribbon
cable, and most use some form of DMA to keep CPU usage down, much like
SCSI.

Pioneer used to make some really cool slot-load DVD-ROM drives, but
those have all but disappeared. I've never seen a SCSI writer.

As for software, the CDRECORD and DVDDAO software available on Hobbes
works just fine - I just deployed a new eCS 1.2 system yesterday for a
doctor's office that uses it for backing up their patient records every
day. MUCH faster than tape, and more reliable, since the media can be
read on any DVD drive, not just a tape drive, and there's no special
software required.

Have you tried "choking down" the speed of the drive on the command
line? Many RW discs are only 4x unless specified as "high-speed",
which are usually 10x or more... set the speed to 4x and try it again.

Hope this helps!
