It was a ground launched. "The Snark air breathing intercontinental
missile had a range of 6,250 miles and a maximum speed of 650 mph. It carried
a neuclear warhead and was controlled by an internal celestial guidance
system.
The first operational Snark unit was activated by SAC in 1958, but Snarks
were with drawn from service in the early 1960s as ballistic missiles became
available."

It is suprising how old some of the ideaa and equipment is. A friend
was flying a T-33 around the nation testing the radar map-match equipment
back in 1953... I was using the automatic star tracker in the B-52 back in
1958. The Hound Dog missile was a junker in most B-52 crews opinion. Most of
us (and the RAF) wanted the "Sky Bolt" but Strange Mac did not like anything
made by Boeing... That is a long story also.
