On 02-17-98, DAVID HARTUNG declared to ROBERT PLETT:
DH> RP> AFAIC, the way to handle it is the way it was done before any
DH> RP> government involvement ever existed.
DH> I tend to agree, but if the idea of abolishing the Public schools is
DH> ever discussed outside of forums such as this, you can be sure that
DH> folks will ask about the poor folk. Best we have an answer ready. Point
The Separation of School and State Alliance held its third major
conference this last November, in Arlington, Virginia. Their basic
premise is that in order for real education reform to take place, the
state must be removed from education altogether. You can read about it
and how they conclude poor students would benefit most at:

DH> of fact, access to education(note, I said education, not schools) has
DH> been one of the reasons our nation has become the greatest nation this
DH> world has ever seen. This access was not always provided by the
DH> government, but has always been there.
Still would be - parents would see to it, just as they did originally in
this country. Whatever they come up with would be far better than the
public school system we now have - just recently, a city in Michigan
(think it was Michigan, coulda been Wisconsin) gave a new dumbed-down
standardized test to every student in the city, and NO ONE PASSED!
Teaching at a college part-time places me in the position of working
with the products of our public education system on a regular basis,
where direct interaction and observation shows them continuing to get
worse. The situation is well beyond pathetic.
Just saw a news report showing the latest math and science score
comparisons internationally - the US now ranks 18th of 21 nations.
