Be careful...no work can kill a band. We get our own bookings, and that's
been fine by us. We work about as much as we want to. The dealings we've
had with agents has not worked out at all, mainly because they are all in
Vancouver, and they don't care about us Victoria based bands, they just want
to keep "their" bands working.
I guess with a comedy act, you're comitted more to agents to get into the
venues. For us, it's easier since we can always find a private group that
wants to do a fundraiser dance. Some of the club owners are calling us now
(periodically at least) so that's a nice change. We recently called up a
club for a gig, and they said "We were wondering about you guys...yep, you're
on our regular rotation...is May 1st ok?" Now that's what we like to hear!
With that kind of a response, we don't need agents.
We did an outside gig on Canada Day last year (July 1st) and the person
running the monitor mix stood beside me the whole gig. That was un-nerving
since I consider him to be one of Victoria' best guiarists. He owns his own
music store (and I used to play with his sister - music only!) but he has
stated recently that he would like to get our band a few bookings for a small
fee. That's great, and I'm all for it, and I'm actually flattered to find
out that he really likes our band. I was always envious of his band "Alloy".
