JP>If it's any help to anyone reading to know this: I have my old
JP>Adaptec 1542CF in my new FIC PA 2012 motherboard with 32MB of RAM,
JP>with the /DBUFF switch to AHA154X.ADD, and there have been no ill
JP>effects.
I think it probably does work OK for most people. I tried it for a while
with no ill effects. I have seen some people blame it for
un-reproducable problems that they claimed stopped occuring when it was
removed. For that reason I remain cautious about it. It has also
bothered me that IBM still fails to document it, or add it to Warp 3, or
add the logic to other busmaster's. IBM has updated other Adaptec
drivers for Warp 3 via the various fixpacks. Adaptec always kept OS/2
drivers on their support site but not this one, in fact the only place
that it seems to appear is on the Warp 4 CD.
JP>This is, of course, only an interim solution whilst I buy a new PCI
JP>SCSI host bus adapter. Having examined the options, I'm still
JP>thinking of a DPT 2144UW. I looked at a Diamond FirePort 40 Ultra
JP>Wide SCSI PCI HBA, since everyone was crying "faster chipset and much
JP>cheaper than Adaptec! faster chipset and much cheaper than
JP>Adaptec!", and I didn't like the corners that had been cut on the
JP>board in order to make it much cheaper than Buslogic, Advansys, and
JP>Adaptec.
I think the DPT is a very good choice. The Diamond seems to be too
controversial a card for general recommendation. There are again claims
that Diamond played with timing like they are famous for with their
video products to gain a speed edge. The SCSI newsgroup on usenet is
full of people complaining about problems that they are having that just
do not seem to exist with other brands.
