Hi Charles, I going to change the Subject from Skydivers if you don mind
to reflect what we are talking about.
CM>WM>Well... I though I had seen the only dolt to ever try a windmill
CM>WM>start on takeoff in a twin, but I guess not! It always amazes me
CM>WM>that these type manage to live as long as they do!
Most of them miscalculate but then they shouldn't be doing it in the
first place.
CM> Speaking of windmill starts, I recall hearing about a
CM>jet fighter getting stranded at a base that didn't have
CM>any starters for his aircraft. He got one of the other
CM>base jets in front of his, tail to nose, and ran it up until
CM>the thing got to the correct RPM, and got it started.
There was an actual case that I know of at England AFB, LA. at
Alexandria, LA. T-38 IP had the same problem. He attempted a single
engine T. O. and was doing good until he rotated the same as with two
engines which is a a positive and rather healthy rotation. On single
engine the T-38 doesn't respond this way and acts rather like a T-33
with a smooth fly off. The error he made was raising the gear
immediately after airborne much the same as with two engines. Accident
investigation found that the raising of the gear and the disruption of
airflow with the gear doors caused the A/C to settle back to the R/W.
He could have made it except for a fraction of a second. He was so
close to success and I guess no one would have ever known. We conducted
SE Angle of Attack test at Bergstrom AFB R/W and found the aircraft to
react quite different with the lost of thrust of one engine and the
Supersonic Design. (i.e. not much lift on the stubby wings)
