In the initial trimester of 2014, AIF conducted the first ordinary on-site
inspection of the IOR to verify the implementation of the measures taken to
prevent and counter money laundering and the financing of terrorism
pursuant to the Law XVIII of 8 October 2013.
 T?he inspection has shown substantial progress made by the IOR over the
past 12 months. As a result of the inspection, AIF has developed an action
plan for the full adaption of procedures to the requirements of Law XVIII
and the implementation of further organizational and procedural
improvements.
 About the Financial Intelligence Authority - AIF
 The Financial Intelligence Authority is the competent authority of the
Holy See/Vatican City State for supervision and financial intelligence for
the prevention and countering of money-laundering and financing of
terrorism.
 Established by Pope Benedict XVI with the Apostolic Letter in form of Motu
Proprio of 30 December 2010, AIF carries out its institutional activity
according to the Statute attached to the above mentioned Motu Proprio and
the Law n. CXXVII of 30 December 2010, as subsequently amended and
integrated.
 In July 2013, AIF became a member of the Egmont Group. Currently, AIF has
signed Memoranda of Understanding for the international exchange of
information with financial intelligence units of other states, such as
Australia, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands,
Slovenia, Spain and the United States of America.

 FRANCIS: THE PROBLEM OF CONFLICTS IS HOW TO FACE THEM
 Vatican City, 18 May 2014 (VIS) - Today the Holy Father, as usual on
Sunday, appeared at the window of his study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace
to pray the Regina Coeli with the faithful and pilgrims present in St.
Peter's Square. The Pope commented on the day's Gospel reading from the
Acts of the Apostles, and emphasised that in the early days of the Church
there were tensions and disagreements. "In life, there are conflicts;
the problem is how to face them. ... Problems cannot be solved by acting as
if they do not exist".
 Pope Francis talked about how the Apostles, when faced with difficulties,
took control of the situation and therefore overcame their problems.
"By sharing, discussing and praying, all problems in the Church can be
resolved, with the certainty that gossip, envy and jealousy never lead to
concord, harmony and peace. There too it was the Holy Spirit who crowned
this understanding and this enables us to understand that, when we let
ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, it leads us to harmony, unity and
respect for different gifts and talents". The Holy Father asked the
Virgin Mary to "help us to be docile to the Holy Spirit, so that we
might be mutually respectful and converge ever more deeply in faith and
charity, with our hearts open to the needs of our brethren".
 Before concluding, the Holy Father asked those present to pray a Hail Mary
for the victims of the floods in the Balkans and for all those who continue
to work to overcome these moments of despair. The Pontiff also mentioned
that today in the city of Iasi, Romania, Bishop Anton Durcovici, martyr to
the faith, was proclaimed a Blessed. He greeted students from various
Catholic schools, the voluntary associations celebrating the national Day
for cancer patients, and all those present, wishing them a good Sunday.

 CLOSE TO THOSE WHO SUFFER AS WITNESSES OF THE RESURRECTION
 Vatican City, 17 May 2014 (VIS) -, This morning the Holy Father received
in audience the Silent Workers of the Cross Association - Volunteer Centres
of Suffering, on their pilgrimage to Rome to commemorate the centenary of
the birth of their founder, Blessed Luigi Novarese. Pope Francis began by
recalling one of the Beatitudes: "Blessed are those who mourn, for
they will be comforted", and commented that "with this prophetic
word Jesus referred to a condition of earthly life that no-one fails to
experience".
 "There are those who mourn because they are in ill-health; there are
those who weep because they are alone or misunderstood. There are many
reasons for suffering. Jesus experienced affliction and humiliation in this
world. He gathered together human sufferings, He took them on in His flesh,
He lived them in full, one by one. He knew every type of affliction, both
moral and physical. ... He experienced hunger and fatigue, the bitterness
of being misunderstood, He was betrayed and abandoned, flogged and
crucified. But in declaring 'blessed those who mourn', Jesus did not intend
to declare happy an unfavourable or onerous condition of life. Suffering is
not a value itself, but rather a reality that Jesus teaches us to approach
with the right attitude".
 Pope Francis emphasised that there are correct and incorrect ways of
living with pain and suffering. "The wrong attitude is that of living
pain in a passive way, allowing oneself to be overcome by inertia, and
resignation. The reaction of rebellion and denial, too, is not the right
approach. Jesus teaches us to experience pain, accepting the reality of
life with trust and hope, loving God and neighbour even in suffering: love
transforms everything". He remarked that this is exactly what Blessed
Luigi Novarese taught, in "educating the sick and disabled to bring
meaning to their suffering as part of an apostolic action carried out with
faith and love for others", and added that with this charism they are
"a gift for the Church. ... united with the Risen Christ, you are
active subjects in the work of salvation and evangelisation".
 In conclusion, Francis encouraged them to "stay close to those who
suffer in your parishes, as witnesses to the Resurrection. In this way you
enrich the Church and collaborate with the mission of the pastors, praying
and offering your suffering also for them".

 CARDINAL BENIAMINO STELLA TAKES POSSESSION OF HIS DIACONATE
