Hello Neall -

CA>> YOU cannot fit Linux onto one diskette and include a GUI.

NM> Charles, please check out the muLinux (micro-Linux).

NM> It is the linux on floppy, with Xwindow and basic utilities
NM> for surfing the internet.

I have 27 links to mini-Linux at my website. Although I have
not had time to review _all_ of the websites I have read a few
pages at each of them.

I did spend more time at the muLinux website than most of the
others and what you _think_ it is is not accurate. The ability
to view graphics is in the LINKS text-only browser and that is
one graphic at a time as an external reader displays them.

If I'm not mistaken the one-disk muLinux you refer to has no
way to connect to a dialup ISP either. It is for intranet use
at colleges etc. Dialup and a few other needed binaries would
have to exist on a second floppy.

It is possible to created additional floppies and eventually
load enough of those onto the ramdrive to have X windows and
early v3 Netscape but it's two floppies just for Netscape. I
don't recall how many for X windows right now.

None of the mini-Linux are well documented and the explanations
I find on their homepages are generally confusing for me and I
suspect for others who do not know the sizes of the binaries
being discussed.

The fact that umsdos using the original FAT file system is dog
slow is seldom mentioned and those that require a reformat and
setup of a true ext2 file system don't always bother to mention
this on the first page. ;-)

Single disk mini-Linux seem to _all_ be either rescue disks
such as tomsrtbt or intranet only use. To have access to a
dialup ISP you need two disks for all/any of them that I have
found so far. That's with text-only browser and only CLI use.
