Is that A-77 provide the tape tensioning with pads behind the tape on
the record/play heads, and or by the supply/feed spools?  Take dropouts
/ fadeouts can be caused by any number of things:
Worn Tape
Worn Pressure pads behind heads
Worn Heads
Worn Pinch rollers or rollers dried out or need cleaning (Teac rubber
 cleaner comes in handy here)
Insufficiant supply spool tension caused by worn brake pads, belts etc.
Insufficiant take-up spool torque.
Insufficiant pinch roller pressure against capstan.
Not all of these may apply as some spools have their motors supply the
tension.
Head replacement would be the last resort, as the match between your
present tapes and the new head would need to be exact for continued
proformance at the level you have now.

Exactly.  The tighter the specs, the more expensive the machine, and
less variation that *should* occur. :)
