Ed,
EV{at}> Glad to hear You got to a Amateur Radio Club meeting.
I rarely go to a ham radio club meeting anymore. Sometimes, I'll
get with some for a lunchtime gathering...but most of the meetings
are in the evenings, when I'm running or checking into ham radio
traffic nets (D-Star, D-Rats, Packet Via Telnet, Echolink). But,
the main 2 reasons are that:
1) Parking is an issue at the apartment complex where I live. I
have come back at night from a meeting or a square dance (another
hobby I have, and there are "dancing hams")...and there was no
place to park in front of my building after dark.
2) So many of the clubs are so political and cliquish (sp?).
After all these years, there are still clubs that argue that
"they are the best doing severe weather operations".
While I am the VE Team Liaision for the University of Arkansas
At Little Rock (UALR) Ham Radio Club (they have a callsign server
that mirrors the FCC ULS), I'm not a paying member of ANY Arkansas
ham radio club. The clubs or organizations I'm part of are:
A) American Radio Relay League (ARRL) - Life Member, mainly as a
VE Team Liaison.
B) Courage Handi-Hams - Life Member, do very little with them
anymore, except for checking into their daytime net, which is
rare.
C) Philadelphia Digital Radio Club - Try to check into their
net on Monday via D-Star or D-Rats.
D) North Carolina Radio Group (Facebook).
E) Memphis Digital Amateur Radio Club - Check into and run when
needed, the Community Emergency Response (CERT) D-Star Net on
Thursday, and the MDARC D-Star/D-Rats Net on Friday.
F) Portage County Amateur Radio Service (PCARS).
More info is in my bio on QRZ.
