I'm not an experienced Linux user but I've been watching and
evaluating as best as I could the comments and opinions about
various Linux CD distributions.

Debian is frequently referred to as the most 'user-friendly'
install (at one time it was Suse). RedHat is _very_ mainstream
with small business users but is expensive to purchase (IMO).
SlackWare is the 'geek' install but is often used for mini
install packages.

Knoppix will allow you to see if Linux can really be something
you would want on your system without the need to fight with
any install at all. It executes entirely within memory from the
bootable CD (or you can use a boot floppy).

Peanut Linux is middle of the road and has a very good
reputation. It claims to be setup for new Linux users and is
quite complete including the fancier GUI desktop (KDE), and up
to date libraries and other software packages. Peanut can be
free if you download the 340 meg file or you can purchase the
CD for $29.95 from Canada (they also except checks).

Mini-installs (27 of them), Knoppix, and Peanut links exist at
my tech website.
