The technical difficulties overcome in getting Apollo 13 home when it suffered catastrophic failures on the way to the moon would have made a great movie except it would have been unbelievable how they in fact pulled it off. There was a movie and it is unbelievable. John Glenn was instructed to leave his retropack attached during re-entry as mission control had indication his heat shield was loose during the first full orbit Mercury flight. They didn't even check for damage dispite the ability to do so.
