I could be wrong as well but the thing is they didn't even
try having been aware of a problem.
The technical difficulties overcome in getting 
Apollo 13 home when it suffered catastrophic failures
on the way to the moon would have made a great movie 
except it would have been unbelievable how they in fact  
pulled it off. There was a movie and it is unbelievable.
John Glenn was instructed to leave his retropack attached
during re-entry as mission control had indication his heat shield 
was loose during the first full orbit Mercury flight.
They didn't even check for damage dispite the ability to do so.
Gross negligence.
