PE>> 3. Have you successfully sent UUCP mail yourself?
BL> No. I sent an plain text message named tml.txt saying "get
BL> stuffed, Paul". Did you get it?
PE> Nope. I'll check to see if it is located in my "spool" or
"bad"
PE> directory or something.
I got erased at this end, but I think cyberspace ate it. Could you
have a look in your spool and post a few .DAT .XQT and .CMD files so
I can see what the format is? They'll probably be around backwards in
Unix. I'm not sure if I need three files or only DAT and CMD to send
each file up, or if one CMD will do the lot...
And I'd really like that file with the Gunbathc header so I can
try it on gzip.
PE> I don't think you should be doing this at this stage, even I'm
PE> not doing that, you should be getting some software to do it
PE> all for you, and then write your own replacements later (where
PE> you can hopefully have some idea what the specs are - because
PE> basically I don't either).
You chicken wimp! I've seen more courageous #16 frozen chooks at
Jewel!
BL> S 0287. DAT D.krypton0287 shadow - 0287.DAT 0666 XQT
BL> S 0287. X.krypton0287 shadow - 0287.XQT 0666
BL> That seems clear enough. It's telling UUCICO to rename 0287.DAT
BL> to D.krytron0287 in Unix format (krypton is the recipient)...
BL> but where does the 0666 come into it?
PE> Short answer - I don't know. Long answer - 0666 is an octal
PE> number containing the file mode as used by a unix system. "0"
PE> is how you indicate an octal number in C.
Ahh! I'd forgotten about bloody Unix and its love fore octal!
PE> These modes require 1 bit each, to say whether they are on or
PE> off. So the bit pattern in this case is 111111101, or 111 111
PE> 101, or 0775. 0666 means rw-rw-rw-.
Thanks for that, Paul.
BL> How do you pick that number?
PE> Leave it at 0666?
I was going to do that... 666 is the nunber of the beast.
BL> And how do you pick the 0287 (in hex, I suppose)? Or do you
BL> just pick it out of the air?
PE> My guess is pick it out of the air.
That was my guess too.

PE> Change "krypton" to "Ubobl" for now, and leave
the rest the
PE> same (whatever it does).
I was going to start my messages at 0001... see? Why so chicken?
This is easy... just make it up as you go along. ROFL!
BL> I want my account name changed from Ubobl. "You-bobble" does
BL> not appeal to me. How about boblaw, nonsens, or zorro?
PE> I don't want to change your login name, since that is
PE> "standard". If you were a "normal unix user"
dialling onto my
PE> system (or any other unix system), you would be assigned a
PE> userid, most likely "bobl". However, if you turn around and ask
PE> for a UUCP account, they'll tell you, "ok, it's set up, your
PE> UUCP userid is Ubobl", the "U" being the convention
to say that
PE> it is a UUCP account.
I'll try to think up something that goes with U, then. How about
Ubewdy? Or Ubastard? Anyway, I'll put up with Ubobl for now. When
we've got it sorted you and I can do a search and replace.
BL> WTF is the name of your echoes anyway?
dial.tml.locsysop tml.locuser avtech sysop (MY FORMATTER ATE IT)
That makes some sort of sense. Why the dial. in front of everything?
BL> zorro{at}scorpio.rosebay.matra.com.au?
PE> Change the "zorro" to "Ubobl" and the answer is
"yes, I think
PE> so, but only on the 'pretend internet'". Basically, you are NOT
PE> internet contactable, if anyone on the real internet uses that
PE> address, it won't reach you.
Why not? If you used your real address avon instead of scorpio (you
should be virgo anyway), it would work.
PE> My original intention was to act as a GATE, to bring internet
PE> newsgroups into the new network, so that on the real internet,
PE> they would all appear as messages coming from
PE> avon{at}rosebay.matra.com.au (the only real address - notice no
PE> scorpio). The reason I was going to do the gating was mainly to
PE> ensure a large supply of messages, and I was happy to gate from
PE> internet technology to internet technology.
That's what I thought the intention was... a way to shove it right
up Fido by slowly bleeding it into the Internet, not just as a carrier
but an alternate net. That way, Rod Gasson could have picked up
locuser and AVT via the Internet and the Fidowanker hubs could stick
it up their spoke.
PE> I am NOT happy to gate from internet technology to fidonet
PE> technology. However, since then, Jeff said that HE would gate
PE> the stuff, so now the new network has a large supply of mail
PE> from fidonet, so there is no rush to get the internet
PE> newsgroups. Then there are all the other people O/S who have
PE> said that want to join, and I suspect we will be organizing
PE> that by sending the stuff in the new network OVER the internet,
PE> via a mail message or something.
That's right! We need to get into the Internet proper, and if we
gated one Fido area at a time, we'd murder it! Everyone woudl use your
UUCP technolof\gy and the Internet (once we get TinyMail working).
PE> I don't really know. There are high level names used like "alt"
PE> and "comp". I chose something else, "dial".
Under that, it's
PE> free-for-all. I chose to use "dial.xxxx" for something that was
PE> a generally public echo, and "dial.tml.yyyy" for something that
PE> was just local to my system, in the same way that LOCSYSOP and
PE> LOCUSER are local to my system.
I see. I wondered about the "dial" but you just picked it out of the
air. Good one. Keep the words nice and short.
BL> I'm a long way from being able to send replies (unless you
BL> don't mind them not being strictly rfc-822)
PE> No, I don't mind. Just send me anything that you think will
PE> make it here, and I'll let you know if it made it or not. We
PE> are all very much in the experimental stage here.
I'll hack up a message tomorrow and give it a try. Actually, this is
all pretty easy. It's easier than bloody QWK!
Regards,
Bob
