AA> "x2" makes the modem 56k capable? But I would then assume that ISDN
AA> (digital) service is required? OR....is USR suggesting that their
AA> x2-Client allows an analog modem to switch to digital?
Only the (Internet)-provider that offers you a 56k downlink needs ISDN.
You can recieve Data with 57k and can send with 28.8 or 33.6.
The customer needs only a normal phoneline, but one that is connected to
a digital exchange (hope this is the right word). So it is ideal for
Internet-connections where you recieve a lot of stuff.
For BBS or Fido Mail-Exchange it would be possible, that systems that run
ISDN offer faster speeds for downloading, but uploading never will be faster
that way. So if you want full speed better get real ISDN.
The Modem's ADC which converts the phone-line-signals to digital data
needs to be faster or/and more bits to reduce quantisation noise.
This is the reason why ordinary Modems with Rockwell- or other -"Datapumps"
need a hardware "upgrade".
The USR V.Everything does not have a fixed Datapump. but a DSP that has
enougth power, and the Firmware for the DSP-Chip can be flash-updated too!
The Sportsters i suppose use the same DSP but can be updated only with
EPROMs.
Common Flash-Modems only can update the Modem-Firmware, which controlls the
Datapump. So they are limited to what the datapump was build for.
(This also applies to the Supra).
