I had a biology teacher who was also a fisherman.  He said that the
"turnover" happened around 38F, which is close 4C.  He also taught us that,
if the water got too cold too quickly, the top would freeze before the
turnover.  IIRC, this would cause the oxygen not to be distributed by the
falling, former surface water, and would lead to a fish kill.
