Actually, Laurence, the US/NATO military day starts at 0000. The last minute
of the day is 2359.
For your information:
Often NATO message transmission has a format such as 072349Z OCT 97. This is
called a DATE/TIME GROUP.
The 07 is the date of the month
2349 is the time
Z is the time zone. In this case, Z is GMT/UTC. Eastern Time, whether
daylight or not, is R for Romeo; S is Central, T is Mountain, and U is
Pacific Time. A is Central European Time (GMT+1); C is Moscow Time (GMT+3),
and so forth.
When recording messages, use GMT as often as possible, except when making
reception reports to local stations.
Very truly yours,
Gregory A. Baker, WB3EBO
