CH> TR>My GTE system is CDMA, the pacbell is PCS.
CH> Now I am confused. Sprint in Baltimore uses a system that is
CH> compatable with the one's used in Europe. They told me that their
CH> system was not compatible with the Sprint system in Philadelphia, which
CH> was supposedly cdma. However, Sprint in Philadelphia advertises itself
CH> as Sprint PCS.
Sprint PCS is a brand name. It is not a technial specification.
PCS stands for "Personal Communications System". It describes a
combination of services, including wireless telephony, paging, and voice
mail. ANY technology that can provide these services can be called
"PCS".
Sprint PCS (the brand name) provides PCS (the bundle of services) on
it's networks. The original Sprint system in the Baltimore/Washington DC
area used GSM technology. That is that same technology that is used in
Europe. It was not a major success.
For their new systems, Sprint chose to use CDMA technology. That means
that Sprint PCS customers who buy Sprint CDMA phones can not use their
phones in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.
For what it's worth. AT&T Wireless and some other "A" carriers provide
PCS services using TDMA technology. Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile and other
"B" carriers used CDMA technology to provide PCS services on digital
phones. Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile also provides PCS services on
old-fashioned analog NAMPS equipment.
