USB is slowest by far. Between two models of the same drive, whether
PATA or SATA will be the faster usually depends on the drive
controller's efficiency, as most are incapable of reaching the
controller's maximum speed, instead being limited by the drive's
performance. SATA has the higher theoretical speed, at this point
generally reached only when running more than one drive at a time. When
drives get faster, then SATA will clearly be faster, expecially for
SATA2.

It will be a lot easier to snake a SATA cable pair through a hole in the
case for external use of internal ports than for PATA cables.
