Again, depending on your settings, refreshing the media library is a =
background operation and doesn't require you to open them. It doesn't =
make sense to as the metadata is used to organized and search your =
library. I don't know if there is an initial refresh after install. I =
seem to remember that the first run of WMP after an update prompts you = to
update the library. You can press F3 to see if your are configured = to
only query metadata for new files or whether existing ones should be =
included too. It may be that you have the middle setting which updates =
only files that have no metadata and all but four of your files had = some.

I didn't OPEN the files in question and why four out of a dozen or so? =

The update process made the changes, I didn't even open WMP9.
