DR> If anyone chooses to argue with this....I am currently working in the
DR> business world. Believe it or not, the system I have to work on is a
DR> 386DX8
DR> (turbo'd to 25), a 20 meg hard drive, 2 megs RAM (if that, I think),
DR> no
DR> Windoze, no mouse, and 1 disk drive. I manage with WP 5.1, an *old*
DR> version
DR> of WordStar, and a couple of other old programs.
Sounds a _lot_ like one of the major court-reporting services in the city
I practice law in (Greensboro, NC): they just went to WP 5.1 from using
WordStar for ages, computers are hardly state-of-the-art even after they
bought newer onew a couple years ago, DOS environment.
I've seen _many_ businesses like that in Greensboro.
BTW, this is being typed on a 10-year-old 286 clone running a DOS
environment...one of the main computers for my law practice!
DR> To give my office a little bit of credit, they are starting to update
DR> the
DR> systems. There are now 3 systems with 486's and Windoze 95.
And don't count on getting Pentiums by the time they're "obselete" in the
minds of salesmen at computer stores.
Most of the workplaces HS grads who don't go to 4-year college enter
don't spend their money "keeping up with the Joneses" in computers! And
those kids need to be prepared to work in the workplace as it is, not as some
CompUSA salesman thinks it should be!
DR> The commentary about DOS and other platforms is honest and definite.
DR> Some
DR> of my secretary colleagues have a hard time just copying a disk, as
DR> they
DR> don't know DOS.
Students who know Windows 95 perfectly won't be ready for the workplace
unless they know "obselete" DOS.
