GP~I suspect that if they ever did "separate" that they'd rapidly run into
  ~trouble with their short growing season and lack of arable land, and
  ~they'd rapidly run into real poverty as a 'nation'

If memory serves that's what pulled the last referrendum out of
the fire.. when they were told they couldn't use Canadian currency
or passports if the separated..  Plus there was that whole thing
about whether Quebec 'owns' all of Quebec or not. Much of it's land
was given "into it's keeping" and could, in theory, be taken back
if they leave... Plus Montreal, possibly their richest city,
immediately started talking about breaking off and staying with
the rest of Canada. We may have narrowly missed a civil war..
